Rules & EtiquEtte
Below are our basic uniform rules, academy etiquette, and some tips for washing your uniform. We ensure we maintain a clean and safe environment, something we take very seriously. We appreciate that all our students and their families continue to do their best to respect and support these measures.
Please do not hesitate to ask our staff if you have any questions.
Uniform (GI) Rules
All students must wear all parts of the required Wavebreaker Academy gi for each class - jacket, pants & belt tied properly. (How to Video)
Coloured belt visitors are kindly asked to wear a standard white gi. We are also happy to provide you with a loaner gi on your visit if you do not own one.
Coverage up to the collarbone under the gi is mandatory.
Uniforms must be clean and dry before every class.
No jewelry (any items that cannot be removed need to be taped down to ensure they do not get caught in uniform or fingers during training.)
Clean hands, feet, face, etc. are expected along with trimmed nails.
Any significant cuts or abrasions need to be covered before training.
Gis need to follow the IBJJF requirements for measurements.
Any student missing parts of their uniform, or wearing a dirty, stained, ill sized, or damaged (frayed or torn) uniform will not be permitted onto the mats. Please treat your uniform with respect and take care of it.
Basic Academy Etiquette
When entering the academy, please ensure the door is closed behind you. Kindly remove your footwear and place it on the provided racks & cubbies. There is no outside footwear permitted in the academy beyond the entrance rugs.
Please do not come to the academy if you are sick or are experiencing any symptoms of illness. It is very easy to pass on germs in a jiu jitsu academy.
When entering and exiting the mats, please bow facing inwards.
Notify your instructor when excusing yourself to use the restroom, if you need a break, need to leave early, etc. This is important for our basic safety protocol.
If you are late for class, please wait at the end of the mat for an instructor to signal you in. When they do, enter the mat and greet the instructor. There is no issue with being late, we are happy to have you on the mats, you just need to wait for the instructor to avoid unnecessary disruptions to class.
When using the washroom, please ensure you wear the provided footwear found outside the door. This is the one area of the academy that we do not permit anyone to use barefoot.
Please notify your instructor of any injuries or issues that come up in class immediately, your safety is our primary concern.
All students train with everyone in their class. Learning to work with partners of different sizes, skills and abilities is an important part of jiu jitsu.
Everyone in the academy is expected to respect those around them with their actions and their words. Respect for the mats and the facility is also non-negotiable.
Tips for washing your gi
Ensure you wash your gi after every training session.
If you cannot wash your gi the same evening you train, consider hanging it to keep dry and prevent it from smelling funky.
Use a spot cleaning solution on stains (ie. Oxi Clean, Resolve, etc.) before washing in cold water.
Never use bleach on your gi as it damages the fabric and can dye the embroidery.
Once washed, try to hang your gi to dry. Tumble drying will shrink the fabric. Consider having a fan pointed towards the hanging gi to ensure it dries in time for your next training session.
